Adopting a rescue dog? Many rescue dogs come with past learnt behaviours, some of which we know about, some of which we don’t. Some have had traumatic and complex lives resulting in challenging behavioural issues, others fit into your home with no issues at all as if they have been with you forever. Mandy's experience with working with rescue dogs means she can offer some invaluable advice about what sort of dog to get to fit your current lifestyle and the needs of the dog as well as sound advice and support in dealing with any problematic behaviours that may arise.
If you are considering adopting a rescue dog then Mandy can offer pre-adoption advice and assist you in choosing the right dog to suit your current lifestyle and home environment. If you have another dog already in the home she can provide advice on what type of dog would be best suited to live with them.
SETTLING INTO THE NEW HOME
The transition to a new home can be extremely stressful for most rescue dogs and by preparing carefully and thinking ahead you can ensure that this process is as stress free for you and the dog as possible. Mandy can offer helpful tips and strategies to manage many of the behavioural or training issues that are likely to arise such as preventing separation problems, chewing/destructiveness, aggression and problems with other dogs/pets in the home. If your dog already has some behavioural issues Mandy is happy to liaise with the rescue home in advance and if possible offer some pre-adoption training with you and the dog if required.
It is preferable if you are able to contact Mandy prior to actually bringing the dog home so we can discuss any specific issues but otherwise post adoption visits are best done as soon as possible after getting the dog home in order to address and/or prevent any problematic behaviours developing. The longer a behaviour goes on for the more ingrained it becomes and the more difficult it is to modify.
